Japan launches research and development of "post 5G" communication standards
Release time:
2018-08-30
According to sources, the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will begin research and development of new telecommunication standards in FY 2019, which will replace the fifth-generation standard known as 5G.
The department's goal is to commercialize the “post 5G” standard around 2025 to improve communication speed and stability, as well as make 5G services—such as autonomous driving and telemedicine easier to operate.
Japan plans to propose a budget of more than 1 billion yen in fiscal year 2019 to conduct four years of research and development. By conducting relevant R&D work earlier than other economies in the world, it hopes that Japan will take the lead in setting the global “post 5G” standard.
The 5G standard is expected to be put into commercial use by 2020. The data speed it supports will be faster than the current 4G standard, which began around 2015 and allows a large number of terminals to simultaneously access the network. Therefore, the Internet of Things is expected to significantly promote the development of 5G.
However, radio waves used in 5G technology are easily hindered by elements such as rain and walls. As the amount of data increases, they also consume more power. The Department aims to address these shortcomings and improve the reliability of “post-5G” communications.
As 5G enters the next phase, it is expected to be widely used in remote control of complete driverless and cargo distribution. For example, if people can remotely operate heavy machinery on a construction site from an office or home, this would improve the labor shortage.
