According to industry analysts, at least in the next two years, TSMC will remain the exclusive supplier of the “A Series” processors used by Apple (“Apple”) iPhone.
Market analyst Brett Simpson said in an interview: “As long as TSMC can provide some new technologies every year and continue to guarantee the yield rate, it will continue to be the exclusive supplier of A series processors in the next few years.”
Since 2016, TSMC has been the exclusive supplier of Apple's “A Series” processors, offering A10 Fusion processors for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and A11 Bionic processors for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.
It has been reported that TSMC will still be the exclusive supplier of A12 processors for the 2018 iPhone this year. It seems that the A13 processor used in the 2019 iPhone will continue to be exclusively supplied by TSMC.
There is no doubt that this is undoubtedly bad news for Samsung. Because there were reports in June this year, Samsung is working hard and hopes to recapture part of the A13 processor OEM orders from TSMC in 2019. According to sources, in order to achieve this goal, Samsung is “fully” developing InFO packaging technology and claims to be ahead of TSMC in producing chips using 7nm EUV lithography.
In order to attract customers, Samsung even cut the price of the extreme UV lithography process orders by 20%. Unfortunately, this has not received positive feedback from potential customers. The report said that the reason may be the quality and yield risk of the 7nm EUV lithography process, because TSMC had encountered such trouble before. Therefore, TSMC may fully integrate the EUV lithography process next year or when producing 5 nanometer process chips.
TSMC uses the 16-nanometer manufacturing process for the OEM A10 processor, and the 10nm technology for the foundry A11 processor. This year's foundry A12 processor is expected to use the 7-nanometer process, and the A13 processor is expected to be used in the Ming Dynasty. 7 nanometer process + extreme ultraviolet lithography process.
